FAQ - VA 10-10EZR

What is the purpose of VA 10-10EZR?
Does this feature allow you to do something really special, like making a high fidelity movie video, or even capturing a high definition video of what's on the screen? Yes and No. First on the list is the fact you don't need to do anything special to get this feature running on your VA 10-10EZR. The system will automatically kick in under regular software usage. With the firmware update, you're not going to be able to get your hands on anything new that's not already been made by Sony, but there is the potential for something cool. This firmware update is also aimed at those who are running the FW V50 or FW V50D model series. To check if your unit is on the list, just look at the bottom of your screen and look for the words' firmware update — it will say FW V50A or FW V50D (V50 or V50D in the US) respectively. You should be able to manually boot up and get to the software selection menu if you've got the firmware update up and running and ready to go. If you can't boot up, check the device in the BIOS menu and make sure it's FW or V50. While this firmware only allows you to install new firmware, Sony will likely also roll out updates to the existing firmware files that have been included with your unit — meaning if you have a firmware update for V50A or V50D or FW V50 or FW V50A, you should be able to simply install that, so it doesn't matter if it's firmware X.×.xxx or FW 10EZR, we should be able to get to the desired firmware for you. Finally, there's the software for the update. This is a pretty standard update, but you will have to take advantage of Sony's new Vivid mode to get the best experience out of this update. The big thing to note here is the Vivid mode. This is the way Sony describes what their firmware does, and you should have been running Vivid mode for a while now — but there's still plenty of potential for new features to be included in these firmware updates.

Is there a due date for VA 10-10EZR?
This question is one of the many that are not well known. To understand why that's important, it helps to see some history of this release. It was scheduled for release late last year, and it was scheduled for a mid-April release (when a patch and the “recovery data” are both included) ...but then the initial patch got delayed, the “recovery data” got delayed, there were other issues, and then, of course, the problem with the VA10-10EE version occurred. A new patch was scheduled for May. But, again, it didn't happen. Instead, an additional patch with fixes for some underlying issues in VA10-10EE was put together, and that was released in May. That means that, with the “delays” caused by the problems with the previous version, the time between the original April 25th release, and the June 10th one was four months long (give or take a day). In short, the patch included “fixes” for those issues, but the “technical details” behind them remained secret — which is just the way the VA10-10EE was handled. As a result, few people were aware of the issues with the VA10-10EE version (and so didn't notice these problems) and so they didn't have any trouble installing it (and, in some rare cases, a bug in the software caused VA10-10EE to work on the wrong version of Windows, which then caused problems ...which was even rarer than the bug causing some VA10-10EE machines to run the software incorrectly on the right version of Windows). The original version of this article did cite a “due date” as one of the many things that were not disclosed in the announcement of this new release. However, that “due date” turned out to be, as the article said, an error. As it turned out, the May release of the patch for the VA10-10EZR version had not been called out (i.e., mentioned anywhere) in any of the announcements or information about the patch. To this date, there has been no announcement that the May release will include fixes for the VA10-10EZR problem.
